Patriots make the arrival of former NFL MVP Cam Newton official

Ten days after Cam Newton agreed to terms with the New England Patriots, his arrival became official.

As listed on Wednesday’s NFL transaction wire – and later announced by the organization – the 31-year-old quarterback has signed his contract.

Newton’s one-year deal with New England includes a reported base salary of $1.05 million and a maximum value of $7.5 million when accounting for $700,000 in per-game roster bonuses and $5.75 million in available incentives. In all, $550,000 is guaranteed for the former BCS national champion, Heisman Trophy winner and league MVP out of Auburn.

A Patriots depth chart featuring Jarrett Stidham, Brian Hoyer and undrafted rookies J’Mar Smith and Brian Lewerke is ahead for Newton.

Pick No. 1 overall in the 2011 draft threw for 29,041 yards, rushed for 4,806 yards and totaled 240 touchdowns between the ground and air as a member of the Carolina Panthers.

Newton, who started two games before a Lisfranc fracture sent him to injured reserve last season, was released by Carolina on March 24.
